“I just floated around and looked at the earth, and I said: ‘My job right now is just to be a human being, just be a person.’ And you know, I stopped being an astronaut, there I was, a human being in space…” — Rusty Schweickart, the first astronaut to test the moon suit in the vacuum of space. Dialogue at Eight Kilometers per Second is a collaboration between an astronaut and Dana Yahalomi from Public Movement. The project unfolded through a series of conversations that took place during the astronaut’s training, throughout his time aboard the ISS, and after his return to Earth. The conversations become a performative space that allowed the astronaut to explore his identity alongside the artist and highlighted the dissonance between his role as an astronaut and his essence as a human being. Thus, the project examined the tension between everyday, intimate human experiences and the controlled, synthetic, and documented lab-like living spaces of the ISS. The resulting audio artwork invites listeners to engage with the dilemmas and conflicts arising from these conversations: Can we bridge the gap between human nature and rapid technological progress? Can we reconcile the drive to push the boundaries of what is possible with the risk of losing what makes us human?
