Gravity Drama! Yael Frank’s latest work is an artistic experience created especially for astronauts in space. It is a digital theatrical artwork that animates objects on the International Space Station by planting surreal scenes in the existing environment. By making purposeless or illogical objects and situations appear in a hyper-mechanized, monitored and computerized environment where every moment and every centimeter are dedicated to research and the advancement of humanity, the artist seeks to juxtapose micro-culture against macro-science. Her work poses a question: Can a “greedy” cultural experience be crafted inside the ascetic, functional and extreme environment created by research-driven human presence in space? By scanning codes placed throughout the station, astronauts could access an app that allowed them to experience these scenes and objects through an iPad screen, with the scenes layered onto the camera’s live view of the station. Thus, the entire space station became a virtual artwork.
