Throughout the twentieth century, spaceflight evolved into a symbol of human ingenuity, synonymous with humanity’s heroic ability to push boundaries and overcome geographical, technological, scientific, mental, physical or biological limitations again and again. Astronauts became the elite, the chosen exemplars of the human spirit, deemed worthy to operate humanity’s most advanced machinery, the vessel that carries humanity’s best, the vanguard of our species, on their journey to meet humanity’s future. The mission is demanding, the responsibility immense, and the price — staggering; efficiency is paramount, time is money, and time in space is very expensive. “Nothing in Space” is a performance art piece for the camera. For it, astronaut Eytan Stibbe halted all his routine activities for thirty minutes, during which he did not close his eyes, speak or otherwise communicate, read, write, eat, drink or engage in any other activity. He made no voluntary movements. He embodied, in his very being, the antithesis of his purpose, being without doing.
