The Japanese artist launches Ikebana flower arrangements — an ancient Japanese tradition — into space using helium balloons. In the extreme conditions of space, the flowers are documented, becoming immutable, eternal images, frozen in time. Unlike Gersht, who captures moments of annihilation, for Azuma, eternity emerges from the journey: the arrangements are launched, they float upwards and then finally settle into a slow, endless orbit. The piece emphasizes the timelessness of tradition, its ongoing relevance, and the possibility of tradition existing anywhere and under even the most extreme conditions.
