The overview effect is the profound cognitive shift astronauts experience when they see Earth from space. The experience is known to heighten one’s appreciation of Earth’s remarkable fragility, providing a deeper sense of clarity about the human experience and the ability to see what truly matters. Featuring four collages inspired by this phenomenon, this exhibition reflects the tension between the familiar and the incomprehensible, and the connection between humankind and the universe. Using photographs of Earth taken by astronauts on the International Space Station during the Rakia mission, these artworks encourage reflection on our place in the universe and our shared responsibility to protect it. As part of its vision, Rakia strives to integrate diverse approaches and perspectives — including artistic ones — into the space sector by providing opportunities and expanding access to space. In line with this vision, the poems featured in this exhibition were written by high school students for a poetry contest in collaboration with poetry magazine Hava LeHaba. A reading of the winning poems was then streamed from the International Space Station during the Rakia mission. Now these poems are given new life, new interpretations and a new context within the collages. Just as the overview effect fundamentally transforms astronauts’ worldviews and perspectives, the process of creating the collages involved transforming separate elements into a single cohesive artwork. In both cases, the shift involves taking in individual fragments and reaching a broader understanding that changes and renews the original components, highlighting the connection between the familiar and the new. The local artists selected to take part in this exhibition have different styles and come from different backgrounds. Together, they created a diverse collage that sparks viewers’ curiosity about the exhibition’s theme.Studio Gelada is an illustration, design, and production studio, a multidisciplinary art center, and a contemporary platform for illustrators, designers, artists and collectors.
